Education Crisis Looms: Grand Kru Principal Calls for Urgent Intervention in ‘Deplorable’ Schools

By Christian Appleton

WEDABO DISTRICT, Grand Kru County – The Principal of Juduken Public School has issued an urgent public appeal to national and local authorities, warning that the severely dilapidated state of schools across Grand Kru County is denying children essential educational opportunities.

Gibson Doe’s call for action, even as the Ministry of Education (MOE) conducts a nationwide distribution of educational materials. While he and other administrators welcome the new supplies, Mr. Doe stressed that the issue of poor and unsuitable school structures, which he referred to as “mis-shift building,” remains the single greatest barrier to effective learning, especially in rural areas.

Speaking to reporters over the weekend, Principal Doe highlighted the critical challenges facing his own institution, Juduken Elementary and Junior High School, a situation he says mirrors that of several other schools in the county.

He described the school’s condition as “deplorable,” citing:

  • Damaged classrooms and a generally poor learning environment.
  • A severe shortage of essential learning materials.
  • An inadequate number of teachers and limited staff.

The Juduken Public School serves an estimated 97 students from Early Childhood Development (ECD) through 8th grade but is staffed by only four classroom teachers.

“The current situation is undermining students’ academic performance,” Mr. Doe lamented. He noted that while students are eager to learn, the non-conducive environment makes effective learning nearly impossible.

The Principal pointed to a widespread belief that the local Ministry of Education is “doing less to improve or restore students and teachers’ dignity.” This perceived inaction, he added, is forcing individual lawmakers to voluntarily step in and fill critical gaps in infrastructure and resources.

Mr. Doe concluded his passionate plea by detailing the specific necessities for the school to operate smoothly: an urgent need for more teachers, student chairs, blackboards, and basic facilities.

He is appealing directly to the Ministry of Education, local authorities, and humanitarian organizations for immediate intervention to ensure that children in Grand Kru County receive the quality education they deserve.
