ECOWAS Journalists Urge To Be Objective In Their Reportage

Dozens of journalists from countries within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are attending a two day Media Conference on elections reporting in the ECOWAS region currently taken place in the Nigerian capital, Abuja have been urged to be professional in their reportorial duties.

In her presentation, veteran Nigerian journalist Eugenia Abu called on journalists to professionally perform their duties by being balanced and refuse to be used by politicians in compromising their professional services to the people who they are to serve.

Mrs. Abu also urged journalists many of whom are considered as talk shows host not to use their platform to preach ‘Hate Speech’ to cause conflict, adding, “They are using their platform to creating a situation that have the pomposity to create unstable peace in the community”, Madam Abu to journalists.

Speaking on the topic: “The Social Responsibility of the media during elections” , madam Abu urged ECOWAS journalists to be more professional in order to be regarded as the most respected individuals in their respective countries.

The conference sponsored by GIZ and ECOWAS has ended with several recommendations from the participanrs as how their work can be improved through capacity building from ECOWAS countries.
