Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, FU Jijun has presented a cheque of US$2,000 to the government of Liberia for the bereaved families of the 28 Liberians, mostly children, who died on Wednesday in a fire incident in Paynesville, outside Monrovia.
The victims were in a school building in Bassa Town where they were just about completing a Q’uranic recitation program.
Before the official ceremony to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China, actually commemorated on October 1, Ambassador FU said China was deeply saddened by the national tragedy in Liberia.
He appreciated the Liberian government’s pledge to rebuild the Islamic school and the Mosque that were burned to the ground, and promised that the Embassy will provide materials and other support in the course of the project.
In remarks, President George Weah described the fatal incident as “completely heartbreaking” and extended his and the government’s sympathy to the families of the dead and assured there will be thorough investigation of the incident.
At the same time, the Embassy donated three mini-buses to the government of Liberia.
President Weah witnessed the presentation and a brief signing ceremony between Ambassador FU, representing his country, and Deputy Foreign Minister Henry Fahnbulleh, on behalf of Liberia.
The buses could be used as ambulances, the Liberia News Agency has been told.
