China Donates Over 300 Agricultural Machines To Boost  Food Production

… China Supports Liberia Agricultural Transformation

By Amos Harris

The Government of the People’s Republic of China has donated more than 300 pieces of modern agricultural machinery and equipment to the Government of Liberia in a major boost to the country’s efforts to strengthen food security, expand local agricultural production, and reduce dependence on imported food.

The donation is expected to strengthen Liberia’s agricultural sector by providing farmers with modern equipment to improve productivity, reduce manual labor, expand cultivated land, and increase the production of locally grown food, particularly rice.

Speaking Friday at the official handover ceremony held at Camp Sandee Ware in Careysburg, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai expressed appreciation to the Chinese Government for its continued support toward Liberia’s agricultural development, describing the donation as an important contribution to the country’s drive for food self-sufficiency.

President Boakai emphasized that the machinery must be immediately deployed to farmers across the country to ensure that the donation produces tangible results. He challenged the Ministry of Agriculture to establish an effective distribution, operational, and maintenance system that would allow farmers in all 15 counties to benefit.

“Agriculture is not talking. It’s acting,” President Boakai declared, stressing that the government must move beyond policy statements and translate its agricultural commitments into practical improvements in food production.

The President further underscored the importance of agricultural mechanization in transforming farming activities, improving farmers’ livelihoods, and strengthening Liberia’s capacity to produce sufficient food for its growing population.

Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah disclosed that the government intends to expand mechanized agricultural services across all 15 counties, building on 13 mechanization hubs already established in Bong, Nimba, Lofa, Margibi, Montserrado, and Bomi counties.

Minister Nuetah also announced that 130 Liberians, including 27 women, are undergoing a 40-day intensive agricultural machinery training program at the Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI) in Bong County, with technical support from six Chinese specialists.

According to the Agriculture Minister, the training initiative is designed to develop local technical expertise, strengthen equipment management, and ensure that Liberians acquire the necessary skills to operate and maintain the donated machinery.

The equipment includes tractors, power tillers, rice transplanters, mini combine harvesters, front-end loaders, rotary tillers, tractor wagons, trailers, irrigation equipment, mobile dryers, generators, and other agricultural tools. The machinery is expected to support different stages of farming, including land preparation, planting, harvesting, transportation, irrigation, and post-harvest processing.

Minister Nuetah said the initiative would help reduce the physical burden on farmers, increase agricultural productivity, and make modern farming services more accessible and affordable to local farming communities.

Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Yin Chengwu reaffirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Liberia, particularly in agricultural modernization, technical training, technology transfer, agro-processing, and market development. The Chinese Ambassador emphasized the importance of continued partnership in helping Liberia develop its agricultural potential and establish a stronger foundation for sustainable food production.

The donation comes at a critical time when Liberia continues to depend heavily on imported rice despite possessing significant agricultural land and natural resources. The government views agricultural mechanization as a major component of its ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development, which prioritizes agriculture as a driver of economic growth, employment, and national development.

Meanwhile, public expectations remain high that the machinery will deliver practical benefits to ordinary Liberians. Economic and public concerns raised by Samurai Kollie have also highlighted the importance of ensuring that development initiatives under the Boakai administration benefit ordinary citizens rather than being concentrated among political and economic elites.

For the initiative to achieve its intended objectives, the Ministry of Agriculture will need to ensure transparent distribution, affordable machinery rental services, adequate maintenance, and equal access for smallholder farmers, including women and young people.

Beyond the donation, Liberia’s agricultural transformation will also require improved farm-to-market roads, quality seeds, fertilizers, irrigation facilities, storage centers, agricultural financing, and reliable markets for locally produced commodities.

As the government continues its efforts to reduce rice imports and strengthen domestic food production, the arrival of more than 300 agricultural machines represents an important opportunity to accelerate the modernization of the sector. The success of the China-Liberia agricultural partnership will ultimately be measured not only by the number of machines delivered but also by the number of farmers empowered, the volume of food produced, employment opportunities created, and improvements in the affordability of locally produced food.

With the new equipment and ongoing technical training, Liberia has an opportunity to move closer to agricultural self-reliance, strengthen rural communities, and build a more productive and resilient agricultural economy.
