Monrovia, Montserrado, Liberia – May 30, 2025 – In a strongly worded address, Liberia’s Deputy Minister for Public Affairs at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT), Daniel O. Sando, on Tuesday, May 29, 2025, called upon the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) to respect the recent Supreme Court ruling concerning the contentious evaluation of private property. Speaking during MICAT’s regular press briefing, Minister Sando underscored that Liberia operates under the fundamental principle of the rule of law, not political sentiment, and urged all political actors, including the CDC, to uphold the Court’s decision in the paramount interest of peace and national unity.
“This country is governed by laws. The Supreme Court has spoken, and that ruling must be respected,” Minister Sando stated emphatically. “Undermining the judiciary only threatens the delicate peace we’ve worked so hard to preserve and risks destabilizing our democratic institutions.”
His comments come amidst palpable political tension following the Supreme Court’s definitive decision. The ruling, which pertains to a protracted dispute over the assessment and ownership of private land, has ignited significant public debate and drawn criticism, particularly from certain opposition figures who have expressed dissent. The government’s firm stance reiterates its commitment to judicial independence and the orderly functioning of the state.
Meanwhile, Minister Sando also provided comprehensive updates on Liberia’s burgeoning efforts to secure increased global representation and enhance its international standing. He reported significant progress in Liberia’s ambitious campaign for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council for the 2026-2027 term, noting a discernible surge in international support.
“Countries are actively approaching Liberia in support of our Security Council bid, and our diplomatic delegations are engaging seriously and constructively with counterparts in New York,” Minister Sando revealed. “Even a high-level delegation from India is making engagements, underscoring our increasing diplomatic visibility and the growing recognition of Liberia’s role on the global stage.”
Further illustrating Liberia’s expanding diplomatic footprint, Sando confirmed that the nation’s pursuit of a seat on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council is also gaining considerable momentum, with several key maritime nations pledging their support. This bid is crucial for Liberia, given its significant role as a flag state in the global shipping industry.
“Liberia is firmly on course to reclaim its prominent voice on major global platforms,” he asserted with confidence. “We are diligently positioning ourselves as a strong regional and international partner, ready to contribute meaningfully to global peace, security, and economic development.”
Adding to the nation’s diplomatic endeavors, Minister Sando highlighted that President Joseph Nyuma Boakai is currently attending the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) summit in Nigeria. This participation underscores Liberia’s proactive engagement in regional affairs, furthering its diplomatic and economic interests within the sub-region and reinforcing its commitment to West African integration.
As Liberia continues to actively seek global recognition and cultivate expanded international partnerships, the government reiterated its unwavering commitment to upholding fundamental democratic values at home, beginning with an absolute respect for judicial authority and the rule of law.
