The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating the death of an Oregon woman and the hospitalization of another woman in Texas after receiving Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine, as the agency prepares to meet on Friday to decide if the use of the single-dose vaccine could safely be resumed in the U.S.

Key Facts:

  • The deceased Oregon woman, who was in her 50s, received the J&J shot before the CDC ordered a pause in its rollout over concerns that it caused rare blood clots.
  • The woman died after developing “a rare but serious blood clot” within two weeks following vaccination, the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) said in a statement.
  • The OHA and CDC are both investigating the incident and have said that a direct link between the woman’s death and the vaccine is yet to be established.
  • Similarly, a woman in Texas, who also received the shot before it was suspended, has been hospitalized with symptoms similar to others who had suffered blood clots after receiving the vaccine.

A Texas health official told the Austin American-Statesman that information was still being gathered about the case and no direct link has yet been established between the adverse incident and the vaccination.
