Cape Mount Citizens Allege Police Refuses to Respond to Election Violence in Porkpa District ahead of October Polls

Citizens of Grand Cape Mount County have alleged that Liberia National Police (LNP) have deliberately refused to respond to election violence in Porkpa District.

It can be reccalled on the 30th of August this year, it was alleged that there was a fight between two family members who support two different Candidates from different political parties. The fight resulted to reported shooting and injuries in Porkpa District.

According to Porkpa District Commissioner Lawrence Brown, when he contacted the County Police commander, he was told that at night that they could not respond because the lone vehicle serving the entire Grand Cape Mount County had been spoiled for a very long time and cannot be repaired anymore.

On his part, the County Superintendent, Aaron Vince said because the District is under staff when it comes to security deployment, he also contacted the County Commander who told him that the police would have loved to intervene to respond to the violence but it was risky for them to ride on motorbikes to Porkpa District something which was threatening to their lives.

As a result of limited security for two nights, citizens and residents in the district were sleeping in bushes for fear that another shooting might take place due to the agitation between supporters of the two candidates who are from two different parties.

When contacted County Police Commander Joseph Moluber said the vehicle assigned to them in Cape Mont is now beyond repair and can’t no longer help them.  He also said if they don’t get a vehicle in this election, it will be difficult for them as officers to respond to violence in the County.

The Commander also appealed to the Central government to realize the urgency and provide care and logistics for the Police in Grand Cape Mount as the County is one of the areas noted for election violence.

As for the Paramount Chief of the Porkpa District he appreciates the Government of Liberia for increasing security in Porkpa District but asked that vehicles are provided for them to do their job properly, noting Porkpa is a bordering District in Grand Cape Mount County to neighboring Sierra Lone
