Boakai Thwarts CDC ‘First Round’ Victory, As Run-off Appears In Sight

What appear to be unfulfilled quest of partisans of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) on the much talked about ‘First Time Victory’ during the just ended October 10, 2023 general and presidential elections seem thwarted as both parties, the CDC and UP may likely go for a run-off.

The provisional results being announced by the Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Davidetta Brown-Lansana showed President George Weah and opposition leader Joseph Boakai were nearly tied in the race for the presidency following an October 10 election.

Boakai holds a slim lead at 43.70 per cent of the vote while Weah has 43.65 per cent, according to tallied results from 92.8 per cent of polling places, the West African country’s election commission said.

To avoid a run-off, the winner must secure more than 50 per cent of votes cast.
