Pit wall collapses at Avesoro’s New Liberty mine in Liberia …

Dual-listed Avesoro Resources has suspended mining activities in the Kinjor-East pit of the New Liberty gold mine, in Liberia, following a pit wall and ramp failure on Tuesday.

There were no injuries or equipment damage from the wall failure, but activities were suspended to assess the impact of the event.

Mining is continuing in other parts of New Liberty, but Avesoro said on Thursday that ore production volumes would be reduced “for some time” as a result of the event.

The gold production and cost guidance for the full year remained under review, the company said. The miner had aimed to produce between 180 000 oz and 200 000 oz.

Last month, Avesoro reported that it had no access to ore at New Liberty, owing to heavy rain and resultant flooding of the main pit.

The company also had issues at the Youga mine, in Burkina Faso, where equipment was vandalised, following an incident in which an illegal miner was killed.
