Following his declaration that the Liberian Government would begin the enforcement of the usage of the Liberian Dollars banknotes on the market by July 1, 2019, Liberians are pondering over the scarcity of the Five Hundred Dollars Liberian banknote along with others printed by former ruling Unity Party (UP) Government.
The old banknotes are still visible on the Liberian market instead of the newly introduced ones, this situation is said to be pondered over by Liberians especially business people and ordinary marketers who are questioning the government of the whereabouts of the banknotes.
Speaking at the Ministry of Information regular press briefing last Thursday, June 13, 2019, deputy Information Minister, Eugene Fahngon, said the Ministry of Commerce will ensure full compliance of this new enforcement exercise, and further noted that the Liberian Dollar remains the legal tender of the Country and called on the public to accept it.
At the same time, Minister Fahngon emphasized government’s commitment to working with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to implement its program tailored for Liberia.
He said the Liberian Government is willing to accept any recommendation from the IMF aimed at strengthening the Country’s economy.
In another development, the Foreign Ministry has rejected media report that the Government of Liberia does not have money to print new passports.
Assistant Foreign Minister for Public Affairs, Sylvester Pewee, said the report is untrue only intended to spread falsehood in the public.
The Ministry’s statement is in reaction to the June 13, 2019, edition of the Daily Observer newspaper captioned, “Liberian Passports out of stock? ‘Absolutely no money to order new booklet” Passport Director says. “
Mr. Pewee assured that there is no shortage of Liberian passports, but admitted that the Passport Division is facing problem with the machine used to print passports.
He clarified that at no time the Director of Passport granted an interview with any Journalist regarding the shortage of passports in the Country.
