As 55th National Legislature Speakership Election Draws Closer, Callers On Radio Questions Musa Hassan Bility’s Quest
As the 55th National Legislature speakership election draws closer on Capitol Hill with several individuals in the House of Representatives including the incumbent Deputy Speaker, Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa of Grand Kru County District Two Representative, Richard Nagbe Koon of Montserrado County District #11, and the newly elected Nimba County District #7, Musa Hassan Bility are all eying the Speakership
However, some Liberians who are enthusiastic of the process even though they eligible to this legislative process have seriously taken the airwaves to publicly call on members that Lower House not to make mistake by electing one of the candidates, making reference of Nimba County District #7 Representative-elect, Musa Hassan Bility, noting that over the years this man has caused series of disunity amongst partisans of the opposition Liberty Party (LP).
The callers who publicly spoke on local radio stations yesterday, November 29, 2023 also alleged that Rep Musa Hassan Bility created serious detestation amongst some of the executives LP to break away from the country’s oldest and leading opposition political party at the amazement of many Liberians including political activists who questioned his sincerity.
They also called on members of the House of Representatives not to be lured by Representative Bility in any way for the position of Speaker for the 55th National Legislature, noting that his unfavorable international reputation was highlighted at Federation International Football Association (FIFA) when he banned as Executive Committee Member of Confederation of African Football (Caf) for 10 years and fined him $500,000 after he announced plans to take football’s governing body to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and misappropriating FIFA funds, offering and accepting gifts and other benefits and conflicts of interest.
Bility, a former President of the Liberia Football Association (LFA), is said to have misappropriated funds to entities owned by him or connected to his family. This includes money from the “11 against Ebola” campaign, launched by FIFA in 2014 to help combat the spread of the deadly disease across Liberia and the rest of West Africa.
It featured top players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar who promoted preventative measures which can help against the virus. Funds from FIFA Financial Assistance Programmes, received by the LFA in 2015, and other payments were also said to have been diverted, according to Inside The Game.
The callers further noted that the House of Representatives is a trustworthy branch of the Liberian Government, and also the Speakership title in that Lower House, and that person vying for such must be credible at all levels and time, and also must be able to infuse best international grade count in the interest of all Liberians.
Concluding, the callers urged members of that Lower House not to elect Representative Bility as their Speaker, noting that such position be giving to an individual who will have that august body at heart, and someone who damage its reputation.
