Amos C. Sawyer College Dedicates Memorable  Research Annex on September 20th

Wednesday, September 20, 2023, was memorable day for the Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Liberia, with the dedication of Reseach Annex, first in the 162-year history of the College.

You may recall in April 2022, the College under the supervision of Dr. Gray dedicated a faculty lounge  named in honor of Mrs. Thelma E Duncan Sawyer , widow of Dr. Amos Claudius Sawyer; she is the current Deputy Minister for Administration, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The facility which is located on the First Floor of the Academic Complex, UL  Fendall Campus was established by the Dean’s office with ninety-five percent  funded by the Dean’s office with external support from Mrs. Thelma E Duncan Sawyer  and NASSCORP.

The Wednesday’s event highlighted the formal opening of the Research Annex to the College’s leadership, faculty, and staff.

Associate Professor Dr Josephus M. Gray, the Dean of the Amos C Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities, welcomed the Chairpersons, Coordinators, faculty, and staff, gave an overview of the Annex, and stressed the importance of the Research Annex to the college and the university in general.

Dr. Gray was joined by the academic team and faculty of the college at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the facility. According to Dr. Gray, the dedication marks a new era for Amos Sawyer College research focus and a testament to the college support to advance practical research and new knowledge.

Pastors Ben Cooper, Instructor, Department of Political Science and Charles Freeman, Instructor, Department of History offered the dedication prayers.

The dedication ceremony took placed immediately after Dr. Gray  behalf of the President of the University of Liberia, Prof Dr Nelson, presented to the College’s chairpersons and coordinators  16 copies of Dr. Amos Claudius Sawyer latest book: No Land, No Vote at program held on Wednesday, 20 September 2023 at the Thelma E Duncan Sawyer Faculty Lounge in Fendall

All the chairpersons and coordinators received copy of the book while an official  copy was placed in the newly dedicated Research Annex.

During the official launch of the Amos C Sawyer Educational Foundation and Dr. Sawyer’s latest book, No Land, No Vote on August 23, 2023 at the EJS Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, the President of the University of Liberia, Prof Dr  Nelson purchased 125 copies of the book from the Sawyer’sfoundation for distribution across the university.

Dr. Gray was recently appointed as a Member of the Boqrdnof Directors of the  Amos C. Sawyer Educational Foundation.

Dr. Josephus M Gray was recently selected from  among  2,000 full Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors and  instructors to officially represent the University of Liberia on the Sawyer’s Foundation Board of Directors which has its  headquarters in the United States of America.

Meamwhile, it is  mandatory that no student graduate from Amos C. Sawyer College without submitting and defending his or her thesis, Research Project or Practical Research in front of a Seven-member academic jury.

The College has been successful in integrating research in all the 13 degree granting departments, as a major requirement for completion. At Sawyer College, faculties and students pursue a full range of research interests related to their own academic disciplines.

The college has harmonized the various academic departments’ curricula and introduced standardized research methodology course across the college. Students who successfully passed the research course are advanced for sl thesis writing or undertake a senior project as a special requirement to fulfill  a 4-year Baccalaureate Degree Requirements to earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Social Work ( BSW) Degree.

The Amos C Sawyer College, formerly Liberia College has a proud history of providing courses that help communities to grow and flourish, this focus on combining practical knowledge with quality learning and teaching. The College remains driven by its commitment to the Liberian  society and is dedicated to providing quality programs and degrees in a flexible and supportive environment.

The college offers degrees in 13 disciplines and runs certificate and diploma programs in Public Relations, Journalism, GIS, Statistics, Chinese Language, and Performing Arts.

Currently, the College plans to introduce two Master’s degree programs in Communication and Professional Writing, and Sociology.

As a result, two  committees with each headed by Assistant Prof. Nathaniel G.Gbessagee, Ph.D in Critical Writing and Assistant Professor Dr. Romeo Gbartea, Ph.D. in Sociology were  appointed by the Dean of the College to draw out plans and work with other terminal degree holders in related disciplines  for the establishment of a MA degree  programs in Communication and Professional Writing,  and Sociology.

While Assistant Professor Dr. Moses T.C. Jarboe, Ph.D. in Psychology was appointed   head of the a special committee for the establishment of minor program in Psychology.

The Jarboe’s Committee is co-chaired by Prof. Dr. D. Elliott Wreh-Wilson, Ph.D. in Philosophy and former President of Tubman University in Harper, Maryland County.
