ALJA Sympathizes With Journalist Makundu For The Death Of His Son
Veteran Liberian broadcast journalist, Steve Makundu, last Sunday, April 21, 2018, lost his son, Sammy Makundu, in a fatal shooting incident that occurred in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
According to a dispatch from the Association of Liberian Journalists in the Americas (ALJA), quoting the father of the deceased, journalist Makundu, his youthful son was literally “executed” by an unknown person in the vicinity of a night club where he and some friends of his had gone late Saturday evening for entertainment. “My son was shot four times; once in the abdomen and thrice in the head,” Steve painfully recalled while holding back tears. He said the motive for Sammy’s death for now remains unknown, but the incident is being investigated by the Philadelphia police.
The late Makundu was 24 years old. He was a member of the US Marine Corps. Before his demise, Sammy lived with his mother and siblings in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, a two man delegation of the Association of Liberian Journalists in the Americas (ALJA) on April 23, 2018, visited the Makundu family at their residence in Upper Darby. The delegation on behalf of the ALJA family sympathize with the Makundu family for the loss suffered.
ALJA was represented by the Association’s National President, Moses D. Sandy and Mr. Volcano Shelton, Chairman, National Board of Directors. In brief statements, President Sandy and Chairman Shelton, said the Association was troubled by the tragedy and hoped the individual or individuals responsible for the gruesome act would be brought to justice soon.
“Liberia has lost another promising citizen. ALJA shares the Makundu family’s agony and we pray that the almighty God would grant your solace during this difficult moment,” the ALJA National President said. Responding, journalist Makundu thanked Mr. Sandy, Chairman Shelton, and the entire ALJA family for the visit and the demonstrated moral support.
He said the Makundu family appreciates the gesture. Mr. Steve Makundu is a career broadcast journalist with extensive work experience. Before resettling in the US in the early 2000’s he at different times, worked at the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS), Eternal Love Winning Africa (ELWA), and Star Radio, the dispatch concluded.
