Agriculture Liberia applaud locals in Maryland for support in rice production …reechoes calls for increase investment in the sector
Agriculture Liberia Incorporated Country Director Chealy Brown Dennis says his company is overwhelmed and impressed with the level of cooperation and support it continues to receive from locals in Harper Maryland county since it’s expansion of operations there.
Agriculture Liberia is a Liberian owned rice producing company and also other crops. Providing some updates, Dennis pointed their support is evident by the provision of 20, 000 acres of land secured where high quality swamp and country rice with not much fertilizer are produced through the processes of drying, thrashing, boiling and milling.
This, he said it was a gesture from three districts:
Barrobo, Dorrobo and Pugbaken who wholeheartedly embraced their presence and operations in the area. According to him, their expansion in Harper has been greeted by the citizens, stakeholders, former and current Superintendents.
Dennis intimated that with the cordial relationship, local tribal leaders expressed their willingness and provided the land needed for their operations through the signing of what he called the Land Use Agreement.
The Agriculture Liberia Country Director pointed out the agreement is subject to renewal after some years operations. In the agreement, the community provide the land and laborers, while we provide the capital as well as supervisors and managers, adding some social corporate responsibility is given to the community in development programs.
Brown Dennis praised the George Weah led government for support from the World Bank Star Project through the Ministry of Agriculture in July 2023 in the tune of 163 thousand United States dollars.
” As beneficiary of that grant, we were able to procure a tractor, combine harvester, two power tiller, one truck and a modem scale while African Rice also provided us us two power tillers, Dennis narrated.”
In addition, the government provided a facility with three ware houses, a modern mill that processes and bag the rice, according to him. The facility is worth 600 thousand United States dollars, where a former Chinese company had operated for it rice production operations.
” We are highly hopeful the Unity party Government under Joseph Boakai will continue the partnership and support especially with Agriculture topping it’s ARREST agenda for development, Dennis pointed out.”
Chealy Brown Dennis at the same time used the occasion to renew calls for increase investment in the Agriculture sector of Liberia. Dennis said agriculture is the way for Liberia especially in tackling the age old challenge of the country being unable to grow sufficient of it staple food rice.
” Like our Chief Executive Officer Armstrong Jargbah and others have done, I like to urged more well meaning Liberians home and abroad especially those with the needed resources to invest in Agriculture sector so we can grow sufficiently what we eat mostly rice, Dennis explained.”
He believes with increase investment in the agriculture sector, Liberia can confront the issue of importing rice with government 200 million United States dollars annually.
Through the kind of increased investment in soil we yield for, Liberia can significantly contribute to the economy from agriculture, he explained.
He added Liberia Rice is on the Liberian market package in the 50kg bag for now and sold for 20 United States dollars in Nimba, Maryland and Monsterrado counties at its point of sale as well outside Liberia.
