African Biology Olympiad (ABO) Launches Maiden Edition to Inspire Africa’s Next Generation of Biologists
LAGOS, Nigeria — The African Biology Olympiad (ABO), spearheaded by organizers Prestige & Graca, has officially commenced its maiden edition, marking a significant milestone in advancing science education across the continent.
The ABO aims to establish a dynamic platform where young students from across Africa can showcase their knowledge, creativity, and skills in biology, fostering a deeper passion for science and innovation.
“The African Biology Olympiad is designed to ignite students’ interest in biology and empower them to develop solutions to some of Africa’s most pressing challenges — including environmental conservation, public health, and sustainable agriculture,” the organizers stated.
By nurturing this young scientific talent, the initiative hopes to cultivate a generation of problem-solvers who will drive sustainable development and improve lives across Africa.
Competition Structure and Timeline
The Olympiad is structured into two primary rounds:
- National Round (November – May):
- Each participating African country will conduct its own national-level competition to select its top student representatives.
- Some countries, like Nigeria, will implement a multi-stage process:
- School Stage (November – March): Schools register and run internal competitions.
- State Finals (February – March): Top students from schools compete at the state level.
National Final (March): State winners compete to secure a spot in the Continental Round.
- Continental Round (August):
- The best students selected from each participating country will compete to determine Africa’s top young biologists.
The competition is open to students across two categories:
| Category | Eligibility |
| Junior Category | Students in JSS 1 – JSS 3 |
| Senior Category | Students in SS 1 – SS 3 |
Registration and Opportunities
Schools and students across Africa can register via the official ABO website: africanbiologyolympiad.org. Schools must register first before their students can be enrolled, though individual students may also register directly if their schools choose not to participate.
Participants will gain access to engaging biology content, mentorship, and exposure to advanced scientific thinking. Top-performing students will be presented with exceptional opportunities, including:
- Representing their countries on the continental stage.
- Winning prizes, scholarships, and mentorship opportunities.
- Building valuable academic and career prospects in the science and technology fields.
