ActionAid Liberia Announces Activities for the 2025 Menstrual Health and Hygiene Day Celebration

Monrovia, Liberia – May 25, 2025 – In a lead up to this year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day, ActionAid Liberia is proud to announce a series of impactful activities in commemoration of this year’s Menstrual Health and Hygiene-2025, celebrated globally under the theme: “Together for a Period-Friendly World.”

This year’s theme highlights the collective responsibility to break the silence, stigma, and systemic barriers surrounding menstruation. As part of this year’s observance, ActionAid Liberia is working alongside six young urban women’s movements from Montserrado and four of its program counties to raise awareness on Gender Responsive Public Services (GRPS) and menstrual health.

According to ActionAid Liberia’s Women’s Rights Manager, Markonee Knightley, the activities will engage local authorities, school administrators, healthcare professionals, and the general ActionAid Liberia’s Country Director, Madam Elizabeth Johnson Right along with members of the Young Feminist Movement public.

The goal is to advocate for policies that ensure menstrual products are accessible, affordable, and that menstruation no longer stands as a barrier to girls’ and women’s education, empowerment, and to advance girls and women’s access to healthcare services.

As part of its Just and Equal Communities Project, young feminist leaders are taking the lead in national and grassroots engagements. Through community listening circles, these young women will create safe spaces to discuss personal experiences, debunk myths and taboos around menstruation, and mobilize their peers to advocate for policy changes, such as reducing tariffs on menstrual products and making them available in schools and public institutions.

Key Activities for the 2025 Menstrual Hygiene Day Celebration are a Digital Launch and National Awareness Drive set for May 25, 2025. A national webinar featuring feminist leaders and youth advocates will be held to amplify key messages on menstrual health and gender equity.

And the release of a 1-minute awareness video alongside robust social media campaign materials.

On May 26, the Young Feminist Movement will stage a Community Dialogue and Listening Circles.

During this activity, the Young Feminists Movement will facilitate three major dialogues across selected communities, providing platforms for young women and girls to share their menstrual health concerns and drive collective action for improved services and access to menstrual products.

Then May 28, will be the National Parade and Period Justice Manifesto Presentation. This will be carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection.

ActionAid Liberia will participate in a national parade, followed by a formal indoor program.

During this event, the “Period Justice Manifesto”, a call to action petition, will be officially presented to government officials and policymakers.

ActionAid Liberia will then climax the days-long activities on May 29, with a Breakfast Policy Power Dialogue.

The Dialogue will host a high-level Policy Dialogue Breakfast, bringing together lawmakers, key ministries, and civil society organizations. Discussions will focus on practical policy actions to close the gaps in menstrual health services and eliminate barriers faced by Liberian girls and women.

In addition, selected schools and communities will receive several hundred pieces of free menstrual hygiene kits, reinforcing ActionAid Liberia’s commitment to creating inclusive, supportive environments for all menstruators.
