In a decisive address to the nation delivered from the Executive Mansion on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. provided a steadying voice regarding the recent security developments along the Liberia–Guinea border. Addressing the concerns emanating from the Sorlumba area in Foyah District, Lofa County, the President emphasized that while the situation is being monitored with the utmost vigilance, the primary strategy of the Liberian government remains rooted in seasoned diplomacy and regional cooperation rather than confrontation.
The President assured the public that the government has been actively engaged in managing the sensitivities surrounding the border through established diplomatic channels. By working closely with the Republic of Guinea and the Republic of Sierra Leone within the framework of the Mano River Union, Liberia has sought to de-escalate tensions and restore the status quo. This multilateral approach has already yielded positive results, as President Boakai confirmed that the Guinean government has issued instructions for its forces to return to their previous positions, marking a significant step toward regional stability.
Throughout the address, President Boakai underscored that the pursuit of a peaceful resolution should be viewed as a demonstration of national strength rather than a sign of weakness. Drawing on Liberia’s historical journey, he noted that while conflict is easy to ignite, the process of recovery and nation-building is a far more difficult and noble endeavor. He praised the professionalism of the Armed Forces of Liberia and the Liberia National Police, who continue to work alongside local communities to maintain calm while the high-level diplomatic efforts proceed.
The international community has also rallied behind Liberia’s peaceful stance. The President expressed his gratitude to ECOWAS, the African Union, and other global partners for their messages of solidarity and encouragement. These expressions of support reaffirm Liberia’s standing as a nation that values cordial relations and cultural ties with its neighbors, recognizing that the citizens of the border regions share deep-rooted family and economic connections that must be preserved at all costs.
Concluding his message, President Boakai called for national unity and cautioned citizens against the spread of unverified information that could lead to unnecessary public anxiety. He urged those living in border communities to remain law-abiding and to trust in the official security and diplomatic mechanisms currently in place. By choosing dialogue over discord, the President reaffirmed that the peace Liberians enjoy today—won through years of collective sacrifice—remains the government’s most precious priority and its guiding light in the face of regional challenges.
