Pres. Boakai to Commission Landmark Electricity Project in Buchanan

By James T. Brooks

MONROVIA, — In a determined quest to decentralize ongoing development through the provision of stable and affordable electricity, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. is expected to commission a landmark electrification project that promises to completely transform the Port City of Buchanan and its surrounding areas. Information Minister Jerolinmek M. Piah disclosed on Tuesday during the Ministry of Information’s regular press conference in Monrovia, explaining that the project will provide expanded access to reliable power through strategic investments that align directly with the government’s national electrification agenda and Liberia’s broader development priorities.

Minister Piah revealed that the Liberia Electricity Corporation officially launched this monumental initiative on April 29, 2026. The project is scheduled to be formally commissioned during Liberia’s 179th Independence Day celebrations on July 26, 2026, serving as a core component of the Boakai-Koung administration’s infrastructure development agenda.

He further indicated that phase one of the transformative project will expand crucial electricity infrastructure outward from the Transco CLSG substation through key regional corridors. This initial expansion includes approximately 0.25 kilometers through the substation itself, one kilometer along the Monrovia parking corridor toward Rivercess, and six kilometers extending directly into Buchanan City.

According to the Information Minister, the city has already been switched on with functional streetlights while residential home connections are actively ongoing. He emphasized that the government remains fully committed to building upon these gains ahead of the formal dedication ceremony.

The developmental initiative also includes the installation of modern street lighting specifically designed to improve public safety, visibility, and night-time economic activities. Furthermore, the government’s infrastructure plan will connect various public facilities directly to the grid, including local schools, hospitals, police stations, places of worship, and major commercial businesses. Reports coming out of the Port City of Buchanan in Grand Bassa County indicate that both security and night-time business activities have already taken a highly positive new shape since the initial lighting of the city.
