PRESIDENT BOAKAI DECLARES TUESDAY, JUNE 9, 2026, AS “INTERNATIONAL ARCHIVES DAY”
MONROVIA – The President of the Republic of Liberia, His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has by proclamation officially declared Tuesday, June 9, 2026, as “International Archives Day.” The day is to be observed throughout the Republic as a working holiday. The Presidential Proclamation calls upon the Center for National Documents and Records Agency (CNDRA)—which serves as the National Archives of Liberia—alongside relevant government agencies, civil society organizations, and international partners to observe the day in accordance with prescribed protocols.
This year, World Archives Day is being celebrated globally under the theme “Archives For Justice, Rights, Memory and Futures,” highlighting how archival institutions support accountability, human rights, and democratic societies. In alignment with this global vision, the CNDRA has established a national theme titled “Liberia’s Records, Our Rights, Our Future.”
Historical Context: The Proclamation notes that the International Council on Archives (ICA) was established on June 9, 1948, under the auspices of UNESCO, to protect, enhance, and manage archival records globally.
The CNDRA, which was created by an Act of the Legislature in 1978, is a proud member of the ICA. By celebrating this day, Liberia joins member states worldwide in commemorating the 78th anniversary of the organization’s founding.
To acknowledge, reflect upon, and support the preservation of Liberia’s rich national heritage, the Proclamation invites cultural heritage institutions and all Liberians to actively participate in the commemorative events running from June 9 to June 12, 2026.
While the holiday and proclamation apply nationwide, the CNDRA will host its primary anniversary activities in Buchanan City, Grand Bassa County. The scheduled events begin with a nationwide clean-up campaign on Wednesday, June 10. This will be followed on Thursday, June 11, by a major public exhibition in Buchanan featuring rare historical documents, with active participation from local students and civil society groups. The week of celebration will officially conclude on Friday, June 12, with a grand parade through the city and a celebratory soccer match.
