MONROVIA – A heated dispute has emerged within the Liberian Senate following accusations by Senator Nya D. Twayen, Jr. against Senator Amara Konneh. Senator Twayen alleges that Konneh compromised national security by leaking privileged information and undermining the credibility of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) during a budget debate on Thursday, April 23, 2026.
Senator Twayen condemned Konneh’s actions, characterizing them as “showboating” and a violation of an implicit agreement among lawmakers to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive security matters.
“Senator Konneh publicly praised the Guinean Army while belittling ours, despite a collective understanding to treat these matters with confidentiality; it is hypocrisy,” Twayen stated. He further argued that the “gross disclosure of privileged national security information” demands a formal investigation by the Senate.
Senator Konneh has categorically rejected the allegations, maintaining that all remarks made on the Senate floor were based on publicly available data rather than classified intelligence.
“I have not attended any meeting where I was given official classified details about our military strength,” Konneh asserted. He clarified that his objective during the budget debate was to advocate for increased legislative support for the military, not to diminish the AFL or promote foreign forces.
Refuting the claim regarding the Guinean military, Konneh pointed to his March 19 statement, which commended President Joseph Boakai’s diplomatic handling of the Liberia-Guinea border tensions and called for enhanced regional coordination through the Mano River Union.
The friction occurs against the backdrop of an ongoing border dispute between Liberia and Guinea, a situation Konneh describes as the first major external threat to Liberia’s sovereignty in years. He argued that the current geopolitical climate, coupled with a perceived decline in the effectiveness of international peacekeeping structures, necessitates an urgent, aggressive investment in the modernization, welfare, and expansion of the AFL.
While the exchange in the Senate has been acrimonious, Konneh noted the legislative body’s recent success in securing a budget increase for the military through the approved supplemental budget, acknowledging Senator Twayen’s role in that process.
The controversy follows a high-level, closed-door meeting between President Joseph Boakai and the Senate regarding the country’s security posture. This meeting has fueled speculation regarding the source of information utilized by lawmakers during public debates.
The atmosphere in the legislature remains tense, particularly following the recent expulsion of Representative Yekeh Kolubah from the House of Representatives, who was removed after making controversial claims regarding land ownership disputes involving Guinea.
Political analysts suggest this latest clash highlights the difficult balancing act facing Liberian lawmakers: maintaining transparency and political accountability while safeguarding national security amid escalating regional instability.
