Gov’t Reports Major Progress In Electricity Expansion, Road Rehabilitation, Education Advancement

Monrovia, Liberia – November 26, 2025 The Government of Liberia is reporting significant progress across key sectors—electricity distribution, road rehabilitation, and education development—as core components of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s national transformation agenda.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) regular press briefing on Tuesday, Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah affirmed the administration’s commitment to improving public services and accelerating development projects nationwide.

Minister Piah disclosed that the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) is actively widening its electricity supply to several communities in Montserrado County.

Working in partnership with Chris Electronic Company, LEC has commenced the installation of utility poles and solar streetlights in Bentol City and its surrounding communities. This critical initiative aims to restore power to areas that have been without reliable electricity since the end of the civil conflict.

Minister Piah commented, “Electrification of Bentol and its surrounding communities is a major step toward revitalizing economic activities and improving safety and livelihoods.”

Residents are projected to benefit from improved security, a more favorable business environment, and enhanced social services upon the project’s completion.

Providing an update on national road infrastructure, Minister Piah stated that ongoing and planned works are essential for national recovery and regional connectivity:

  • Regional Corridors: Rehabilitation is underway along the Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, and Gbarpolu corridors, described as “collective corridors” that support regional movement and trade.
  • Urban Congestion Relief: Improvements are being made along the route from Johnson Street’s New Bridge through Clara Town to the Freeport and Bushrod Island, specifically intended to ease traffic congestion and promote commerce.
  • Southeastern Routes: Planned rehabilitation of southeastern roads, including the roadway leading to former President George M. Weah’s home community, with completion targeted before the end of the dry season.

Minister Piah emphasized that these projects are central to President Boakai’s commitment to reopening road networks, boosting commerce, and strengthening national integration.

In the education sector, Minister Piah announced that the Ministry of Education (MOE) is taking decisive steps to increase Liberia’s participation in international academic programs.

He highlighted the recent Erasmus Reformation Session held in Monrovia, which brought together youth leaders, students, educators, and university representatives. The session focused on exploring opportunities offered under the Erasmus+ Program, including fully funded scholarships, youth mobility, volunteer programs, and institutional partnerships with European universities. A major focus was providing guidance on the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Scholarship.

According to Education Minister Dr. Jarso Jallah, the goal of this initiative is to strengthen Liberia’s education sector and enhance the competitiveness of Liberian students and institutions on the global stage.

Minister Piah also restated the government’s firm position on maintaining national order and unity. He cautioned that the administration will not tolerate attempts to interfere with judicial processes or efforts to divide the country along regional or religious lines.

“Regional politics is bad for any country. President Boakai will not allow division based on religion or region, the law is the law,” he emphasized.

Minister Piah concluded by assuring the public that, despite political distractions, the administration remains laser-focused on delivering essential services that directly impact the lives of ordinary Liberians. He noted that as the festive season approaches, citizens can anticipate ongoing improvements in electricity, roads, and education under the government’s broader development drive.
