Gender Ministry Pledges Transparency and Justice in High-Profile Rape Cases

Monrovia, October 7—The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to ensuring transparency, accountability, and justice in the ongoing investigation of the alleged rape case involving former Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. J. Bryant McGill.

Recognizing the heightened public concern and outrage surrounding the McGill matter, the Ministry stated on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. In it, the MoGCSP emphasized, “We strongly urge the public and all stakeholders and the media to refrain from politicizing, prejudging and sensationalizing the outcome of [the] investigation.”

The Ministry noted that the investigative process is at a critical phase, with the MoGCSP’s Legal Team working in close coordination with the Liberia National Police (LNP) to ensure that due process is diligently observed.

The statement added that “Every effort is being made to guarantee that the investigation remains independent, transparent, and completely free from external interference or influence.” The Ministry assured the public that no stone will be left unturned in the pursuit of justice, reiterating its resolve in upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights and dignity of all victims and survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

It can be recalled that the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection received a formal report on September 10, 2025, alleging the rape of a 14-year-old minor by Mr. J. Bryant McGill.

In a separate development, the Ministry extended its profound appreciation to residents of the Vai Town Community on Bushrod Island for their vigilant and courageous intervention in a recent alleged rape case involving a staff member of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The Ministry vehemently condemns the inhumane and reprehensible act allegedly committed by Mr. Sando S. Kromah, age 34, who was reportedly caught in the act of violating a 14-year-old minor. Community dwellers swiftly intervened, apprehended the perpetrator, and rushed the survivor to a nearby medical facility.

The Ministry recognized and commended the patriotism and vigilance demonstrated by the community, underscoring that the fight against sexual and gender-based violence is a shared national responsibility that demands the collective courage and action of every Liberian.

The MoGCSP confirmed that the survivor is currently under the Ministry’s protective care, receiving comprehensive medical treatment and psychosocial counseling. The alleged perpetrator remains in custody at the Monrovia Central Prison pending court trial.

The Ministry reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on all forms of sexual and gender-based violence and called on all communities to remain vigilant, proactive, and united in reporting and preventing rape, child abuse, and domestic violence across the country.
