Former President Sirleaf Condemns “False, Dangerous” Claims of CDC Donation

MONROVIA, LIBERIA — Former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has strongly condemned persistent rumors alleging she donated US$15,000 and 1,000 bags of cement to the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) for the construction of its headquarters. Speaking on OK FM’s “Afternoon Conversation with Julius Jeh” on Monday, September 1, 2025, Sirleaf dismissed the claims as “total nonsense” and a deliberate act of political mischief.
“I have not given a single cent or a single bag of cement to the CDC headquarters project,” the former President stated. “This is a complete fabrication meant to mislead the public.” She urged Liberians to verify information before spreading it, noting the rumors are designed to divide the country and discredit her legacy.
The claims, which have circulated widely on social media and in political circles, have sparked intense debate over Sirleaf’s alleged political loyalties. Critics argue this controversy highlights a growing trend of weaponized propaganda that threatens to undermine Liberia’s fragile democracy.
Analysts caution that such disinformation campaigns not only tarnish national leaders but also erode public trust at a time when unity and reconciliation are urgently needed. The silence from the CDC leadership has fueled speculation about the source of the claims, leading some to view the episode as a sign of political desperation.
Observers warn that if left unchecked, this culture of rumor-driven politics could lead to greater mistrust and manipulation, potentially destabilizing the country ahead of future elections. Many Liberians believe that such falsehoods not only damage Sirleaf’s reputation but also expose a broader danger: a political environment where lies are used as strategy, threatening the credibility of parties and the stability of the state.
