Tubman University Certifies Over 45 Security Officers After Intensive Training
By Christian Appleton
HARPER, Maryland County – William V.S. Tubman University (TU) has officially certified more than 45 of its security personnel, following their successful completion of a two-week Professional Development Course in Campus Security Management. The graduation ceremony, held on August 7, 2025, underscored the university’s commitment to bolstering safety, professionalism, and operational excellence.
The intensive training was led by Commander Moses Sepoh, the Region Five General Police Commander and an adjunct professor at TU. The program focused on strengthening the officers’ skills in modern security protocols, discipline, and professionalism.
During the ceremony, Commander Sepoh acknowledged the significant progress made by the security team but also highlighted persistent challenges. He pointed out issues such as tardiness, absenteeism, and a lack of essential security equipment like batons, handcuffs, and pepper spray. He urged the administration to set higher standards for recruitment, recommending a minimum education level of a high school graduate and an age limit of 35–38 years.
“Security is a disciplined field. Officers who constantly abandon their duties should not receive salaries,” Sepoh stated, calling for improved logistics such as standardized uniforms and bicycles for the team.
University leaders praised the training’s impact. Mr. Thaddeaus Kumar, Assistant Vice President for Human Resources, encouraged the officers to strive for continuous improvement, while Mr. Kidioh Dargbe, Officer-In-Charge for Facility and Campus Operations, warned that new disciplinary measures would be enforced against negligent staff.
Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, Mr. Alexander S. Gandyu, thanked TU President Dr. Olu Q. Menjay for prioritizing the safety of the university community, calling security “foundational to a peaceful and productive academic environment.”
In his closing remarks, Dr. Olu Q. Menjay, President and CEO of Tubman University, praised Commander Sepoh for his transformative leadership. “Empowerment begins with trusting our own people,” he said, defending his frequent travels as a necessity for securing resources.
Dr. Menjay revealed that TU is exploring the possibility of rebranding its security team from “security officers” to “Tubman University Police” to boost morale and a sense of identity, similar to the University of Liberia’s police force. He urged officers to take ownership of the university, admonishing them to protect its assets as their own, rather than as mere government property.
The President announced several new initiatives, including a new Memorandum of Understanding with the Liberia Football Association to offer courses in coaching and refereeing. He also highlighted international partnerships that have provided full scholarships for TU students to study in the USA and South Africa and a new agreement with his alma mater, Mercer University, to supply equipment and materials.
Dr. Menjay concluded by encouraging the officers to remain focused and grow where they are planted, affirming that success is possible right at Tubman University.
The event ended with a strong call for integrity and professionalism, as the certified officers were encouraged to embody the values of trustworthiness and vigilance in their service to the campus community. The certification marks a significant step in building a safe and secure academic environment in Liberia’s southeastern region.
