The United States government has announced it will deport two batches of Liberians who have committed multiple criminal offenses, with the first group arriving in the country on Wednesday, November 13.
The deportees committed crimes ranging from from aggravated assault, car hijacking, assaulting a police officer, driving under the influence of alcohol, sexual assault and burglary.
Speaking in an interview with the Liberia News Agency at the headquarters of the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) in Monrovia, spokesman Col. Abraham Dolley said the first batch of deportees that arrived on November 13 via the Roberts International Airport (RIA) amounted to seven persons, adding that the second batch is expected on December 11, 2019.
Dolley indicated that the LIS has no confirmation with regards to the exact number of Liberians who will be affected by the deportation exercise, citing that once the notification arrives the public will be informed.
He explained that the deportees will not be allowed to immediately leave the premises of the LIS upon arrival until they go through LIS profiling in order to get all necessary information.
The LIS official said after all the necessary formalities are completed, legal family members will be allowed to sign for and take custody of their loved ones.
According to Dolley, the LIS will also conduct a counselling sessions with the deportees aimed at ensuring a smooth reintegration process into Liberian society.
Meanwhile, Col. Dolley disclosed that the LIS arrested a Nigerian national identified asย Oluwaseun Abiodun Tirimisiyu who was in possession of a Nigerian passport and a Solomon Island passport at the RIA on November 7.
He stated that the suspect is currently undergoing preliminary investigation at the headquarters of the LIS.
Also, Dolley revealed that a Sierra Leonean identified as Mohammed Fassell was arrested on the same day at the RIA for trying to evade routine immigration check at the terminal.
Dolley revealed that a Liberian identified as Adama Paulina Soma, who according to the LIS spokesman, is an employee of the RIA security department, was caught aiding culprit Mohammed Fassell to commit the act.
Dolley explained that both suspects are currently being investigated by the LIS aimed at deriving at the motive behind their action.
