Putin warns of “global catastrophe” if NATO clashes with Russian army
As the Russia-Ukraine war escalates, the US on Friday announced an additional $725 million military assistance for Ukraine. This comes after Russia’s recent missiles attacks on civilians in Ukraine.
In an official statement, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, “The aid comes in the wake of Russia’s brutal missile attacks on civilians across Ukraine, and the mounting evidence of atrocities by Russia’s forces.”
This military assistance package includes high-speed anti-radiation missiles (HARMs) and precision-guided artillery as well as medical supplies, the Defense Department said in a statement. HARM is an air-to-surface tactical missile designed to seek and destroy enemy radar-equipped air defense systems, according to the description on the official website of the US air force. The package also includes the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HUMVEE).
With this the US’s security assistance to Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion amounts to over $17.5 billion, Reuters stated in a report. The US had already provided 20 of the advanced High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, and has promised 18 more.
The announcement made on Friday comes on the heels of meetings at NATO, where leaders from Europe and around the world pledged weapons and air defence systems to Ukraine. The UK said last week it would provide missiles for advanced NASAM anti-aircraft systems that the Pentagon plans to send to Ukraine. Britain also is sending hundreds of drones and 18 howitzer artillery guns. Germany has sent the first of four promised IRIS-T air defence systems.
