President Donald Trump says he looks forward to a meeting with North Korea leader, Kim Jong Un.
He said this in reaction to Un’s surprise visit to China on Wednesday.
Un had a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping but details of the talks have not been fully revealed.
In his reaction, Trump tweeted “For years and through many administrations, everyone said that peace and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula was not even a small possibility.
“Now there is a good chance that Kim Jong Un will do what is right for his people and for humanity. Look forward to our meeting!”.
In another tweet, he said: “Received message last night from XI JINPING of China that his meeting with KIM JONG UN went very well and that KIM looks forward to his meeting with me.
“In the meantime, and unfortunately, maximum sanctions and pressure must be maintained at all cost!”.
According to Xinhua, Chinese state media, Kim told Xi he was open to summit talks with Trump.
“If South Korea and the United States respond with good will to our efforts and create an atmosphere of peace and stability, and take phased, synchronized measures to achieve peace, the issue of the denuclearization of the peninsula can reach resolution,” Kim said.
