GNN contact based in the United States has disclosed that the United States Congress has revealed that the mandate of the United States Government to call for the immediate establishment of ‘Extraordinary Criminal Tribunal’ for Liberia will be enforced at all cost with the help of some Afrin Union and ECOWAS.
This objective of the setting up of the tribunal is to speedily bring to justice of this who actively took part in the Liberian civil war that killed in cold blood thousands Liberians including foreign nationals, and are currently living with impunity.
According to our source, the United States Government has stressed the importance of the setting up of the tribunal due to the long standing relations with Liberia, and noted that the mandate of the US has reportedly been extended to the regional bodies including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and African Union (AU).
Warlords to face the tribunal in order for them to bear the full weight of international law violated during the period of the civil war and their involvement and heinous crimes committed during the country’s years long civil war.
This reported mandate from the superpower is expected to be enforced immediately after the highly contested United States presidential elections, which is expected to be held at this end of this year, noting that whoever wins as President of the United States will uphold the mandate of the Congress for the implementation of the establishment of this tribunal, according to our US based source.
According to our contact in the United States, quoting credible sources at the Congress, major steps have been taken by the Congress to enforce that its earlier move for the establishment of the Tribunal for Liberia by calling on the leadership of ECOWAS and AU to allegedly abort any further connection with former warlords who are reportedly masquerading the corridor of powers in the region, making specific reference to the Liberian situation.
Recently, one of the former warlords who was actively and massively involved in the Liberian civil war that murdered in cold blood over 250,000 including a sitting president and innocent Liberians that caused the destruction of the country’s infrastructural who is also in the Liberian parliament was recently asked to relinquish his position at the ECOWAS Parliamentary allegedly based on similar calls to disallow any warlord or would be warlord from participating in regional politics as their arrest was reportedly been on the way.
Two years ago some members of the United States Congress called on the Liberian leader, President George Manneh Weah who once served as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador to swiftly implement recommendations of the Liberia Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) which had earlier called for harsh punishment on those who committed heinous crimes against humanity during Liberia’s fifteen years senseless civil war.
Two years ago, US House Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously passed a resolution yesterday supporting full implementation of Liberia’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission‘s (TRC) recommendation for the establishment of an Extraordinary Criminal Tribunal for Liberia.
The resolution comes on the heels of President George Weah’s first visit to the United States when he took office in January 2018. In advance of President Weah’s address to the United Nations General Assembly, 80 regional, national and international civil societies groups issued an open letter calling on him to implement the TRC recommendations.
“This resolution is very exciting because it shows the willingness of the United States government to use it’s political ties to Liberia to support victims in their call for justice and accountability for civil war atrocities,” said a senior staff of the Center for Justice & Accountability, an international human rights legal organization.
Similar call was made On July 26, 2018, by the United Nations Human Rights Committee called on the Liberian government should establish a process to bring about accountability for past war crimes. The committee expressed “concern that none of the alleged perpetrators of gross human rights violations and war crimes mentioned in the TRC [Truth and Reconciliation Commission] report has been brought to justice.”
Since that time of the US Congress stance to call on the George Weah-led government, sources closed to the GNN has revealed that the United States is still concern about the immediate of the tribunal, noting that those who took part in country fifteen years long brutal civil war are brought to book in order to bear the full weight of the humanitarian law.
According to sources also closed to the ECOWAS Parliament, one of Liberia’s representations at this august African body recently turned down one of Liberia’s representatives to this regional body (ECOWAS) allegedly due to pressure about his active role played in the famous Liberian civil war that took the lives of over 250,000 and the destruction of the country infrastructural which are yet to be reshaped.
The Liberian government headed by President George Weah is yet to recognize the importance of the establishment of a war and economic crimes courts despite of public outcry, while many of those who robbed the country and killed in cold blood innocent persons are still roaming the country’s political corridor.
“Ninety Nine Days for rogues one day for master will one day come to a reality, meaning that those who murdered people in cold blood will one day face the full weight of the law,” Annie S.K. Cooper, a resident of central Monrovia speaking to the GNN during the week supporting about the establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court asserted.
