Beautifully situated and spread over 17 acres of land adjacent to the Junk, Farmington and Du rivers and the Atlantic Ocean, the Liberia Maritime Training Institute (LMTI) is impressively making progress in the West Africa sub region under the leadership of one of Liberia’s finest administers and workaholics , Lenn Eugene Nagbe.

Since his ascendancy as head of that institution, ‘Eugene’ as he is affectionately call has been doing in his powers to regain the credibility of that very important agency of the Liberian government, making the LMTI as the world class learning community of excellence.

As it is widely known, ship owners around the world require competent and trained seafarers to man their vessels, as Liberia been the owner of the second largest ship registry in the world, it is responding to the needs of its customers and the international market place by opening the Liberia Maritime Training Institute (LMTI),with quality training facilitate aimed at producing well-trained, fully qualified and certified seafarers in accordance with the Standards of Training, Certifications and Watch-keeping(STCW) Conventions and Code.

With it vision to lift and return the Liberian Maritime Heritage to its rightful position, while enhancing the capacity and quality of Liberia’s future workforce, and its mission, the LMTI is capable to provide the highest quality of maritime focused education and vocational skills to qualified Liberians for domestic and international workforce capacity building.

LMTI, according to sources is the only maritime Institute in Liberia to offer various maritime related courses and vocational oriented courses for the international and local workplace; professionally managed and run by highly experienced international staff and faculty.

It is indeed equipped with the state of the art facilities and equipment for high quality of delivery and training, facilities at this nation premier training center are comfortably arranged including AC living quarters and decent amenities.

At the LMTI, model course aims to meet the mandatory minimum requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency in Table A-III/1 of STCW 2010 for the function Marine Engineering, Electrical, Electronic and Control Engineering Maintenance and Repair at the Operational Level, Controlling the Operation of the Ship and Care for Persons on Board at the Operational Level is being offered with professional and well-grounded instructional staffs.

Short courses being taught at LMTI including:

Personal Survival Techniques (PST); this course is in accordance with Sec A-VI/1-1 of the revised STCW’78 Convention & Code as amended.

This course is in accordance with Sec A-VI/1-1 of the revised STCW ’78 Convention & Code as amended. This course is principally intended as basic training for seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity onboard ship as part of the ships complement with designated safety duties in operation of the ship. There are no particular educational requirements.

The competencies covered include: Survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment, Types of life saving appliances, and Principles concerning survival.

Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF)

This course is in accordance with section A-VI/1-2 of the revised STCW Convention & Code as amended.

This course is in accordance with section A/VI/3 of the revised STCW Convention & Code as amended. This course is suitable for employers to train their personnel or those employed or seeking employment as Officers and Ratings on board vessels and offshore installations.

The competencies covered include: Control fire-fighting operations aboard ships     Organize and train fire parties, Inspect and service fire detection and fire extinguishing systems, and Investigate incidents of fire.

Elementary First Aid (EFA):

This course is in accordance with section A/VI/1-3 of the revised STCW Convention & Code as amended.

This course is in accordance with section A/VI/1-3 of the revised STCW Convention & Code as amended. This course is suitable for employers to train their personnel or those employed or seeking employment as Officers & Ratings on board vessels and Offshore installations.

The competencies covered include: Appreciation of body structure and functions,     Understanding immediate measures to be taken in case of emergencies,     Assessment of needs of casualties, Rescue and transport a casualty, and First aid and CPR.

Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats (PSCRB)

This course is in accordance with section A/VI/2-1 of the revised STCW Convention & Code as amended.

This course is in accordance with section A/VI/2-1 of the revised STCW Convention & Code as amended. This course is suitable for employers to train their personnel or those employed or seeking employment as Officers & Ratings on board vessels and Offshore installations.

The competencies covered include:  Take charge of survival craft/rescue boat after launch, Operate a survival craft engine, Observe safe working practices, Manage survivors and survival craft, Use of communication and signaling devices.
