THE NATIONALISTIC TALK: The COVID-19 Walhalla, As Gov’t Relaxes Lockdown Confirmed Cases Haste ‘4G’

With Joel Cholo Brooks |

Despite efforts being applied by health authorities in the country calling on Liberians and foreign residents to follow all health protocols in the prevention of the deadly Coronavirus or COVID-19, others have resolved to ‘Doing their own thing’ by denouncing warnings being put forward by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL).

As some Liberians said to be in defiance of the mandate of  health authorities on the danger this deadly virus poses to their existence by deliberately refusing to take seriously the warning by the Ministry of Health (MOH)  and the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) by taking all the necessary health preventive measures.

But instead they have resolved to continue doing those things that they were told not to do by health authorities for the betterment of all Liberians and our foreign residents, their continual refusal to abide by these health regulations may have possibly given rise to the increased of Liberia’s confirmed cases on a daily basis, a situation which is detrimental to Liberia and Liberians.

Up to present, some Liberians are still denying the existence of the virus in Liberia, while at the same time doing those things that they were advised not to do, including social distancing (Avoiding crowding areas), the wearing of nose and face masks, and the shaking hands.

The mandate of the Liberian leader, President George Manneh Weah to relax the 3pm to 6pm and now to 9pm is good for our economy which has suffered a downward trend due to the outbreak of the virus, and the restriction early imposed to be fixed, but others see this as a means of getting onboard of their social lives; going from drinking clubs to drinking  clubs, and returning to their families at will.

The issue of social distancing and avoiding crowding up places is not been adhered to by mainly marketers, and others business people, while the wearing of nose and face masks is rarely at most market places, especially in the commercial hubs of Viatown , Redlight, Sinkor Oldroad and other parts of the city and its environs.

Liberians must remember that yes indeed COVID-19 is real and deadly, its prevention should not be taken lightly, COVID-19 has taken over millions of lives globally with almost of the world’s richest population been affected. Currently Liberia has climbed to 345 confirmed cases, with 30 deaths, and the total recoveries of 185.

Some Basic Information

‘CO’ stands for corona, ‘VI’ for virus, and ‘D’ for disease, former this disease was referred to as ‘2019 novel coronavirus’ or ‘2019-nCoV.’ It is a new virus linked to the same family of viruses as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

Although for most people COVID-19 causes only mild illness, it can make some people very ill. More rarely, the disease can be fatal. Older people and those with pre- existing medical conditions (such as high blood pressure, heart problems or diabetes) appear to be more vulnerable.

The virus can cause a range of symptoms, ranging from mild illness to pneumonia. Symptoms of the disease are fever, cough, sore throat and headaches. In severe cases difficulty in breathing and deaths can occur.

You can recover from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Catching the new coronavirus DOES NOT means you will have it for life. Most of the people who catch COVID-19 can recover and eliminate the virus from their bodies.

There is no specific treatment for disease caused by a novel coronavirus. However, many of the symptoms can be treated and therefore treatment based on the patient’s clinical condition.

Signs and symptoms include respiratory symptoms and include fever, cough and shortness of breath. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome and sometimes death.

Standard recommendations to prevent the spread of COVID-19 include frequent cleaning of hands using alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water; covering the nose and mouth with a flexed elbow or disposable tissue when coughing and sneezing; and avoiding close contact with anyone that has a fever and cough.
