SOS Children’s Villages International delegation met with the President of the Republic of Liberia, George M. Weah at his office at the Ministry of foreign affairs. Mr. Helmut Kutin, SOS International Honorary President led the delegation and was accompanied by Mr. Augustine A. Allieu, SOS Liberia National Director, Mr. TitiOfei, member of SOS Senate and the National Director of SOS Children’s Villages Ghana, Mr. Alex Kerkula.
The SOS Children’s Villages International delegation was in Liberia for a five days visit, as special guest to SOS Children’s Villages Liberia to discuss the SOS Liberia existence partnership with the government of Liberia. This was the first meeting since President Weah took office as the 24th President of this West African Nation on January 22, 2018.
President Weah welcomed the delegation to his office and expressed his appreciation for their work in Liberia and on an international level. His relationship with SOS Children’s Villages dates back to his days as football player when he served as SOS-Kinderdorf Global Ambassador in 1998. Weah later took on office as the UNICEF goodwill Ambassador.
President Weah and the SOS delegation discussed ways to further strengthen the collaboration between the government and SOS Children’s Villages Liberia in order to provide continuous support to children, youth and families through different programs.
The delegation also met with WilliamettaSaydee-Tarr, Minister of Gender Children & Social Protection (MoGCSP) and her team.
The Ministry praised SOS Children’s Villages Liberia for their many services, making specific references to SOS Medical Center for their level of support to not only children but the country in general. The Ministry noted that the Medical center is providing quality services to Liberians.
SOS Children’s Villages International, Honorary President Kutin classified Liberia as one of the high priority countries; adding that “I am not the current President of SOS Children’s Villages International but promised to take Liberia’s case to the current young generation of SOS leadership”.
National Director of SOS Children’s Villages Liberia Mr. “Allieu noted that improving the lives of the poorest; especially children at risk or who lost parental care remain key priorities. 19 children from a community in Brewerville that was highly affected by the recent Ebola crisis were taken into the SOS Monrovia village in March of this year.”
The Ebola crisis in 2014/15 hit the country hard. It left hundreds of children without the parental care they need. The SOS village in Monrovia took in 19 of them to provide a safe home and education as a stepping stone to a better future.
The government of Liberia and SOS Children’s Villages reaffirmed their commitment to continue working together to promote the well-being of children for their common good.
