Sexual Gender Based Violence On The Increase, As Over 3,000 Rape Cases Reported In Montserrado County In Two Years
The issues of Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) is said to be on the increase here in Liberia with Montserrado County topping the number at over two thousand cases being reported from 2017 up to 2019.
With this latest statistic in Montserrado County which seems to be alarming, some prominent Liberian women who spoke to the GNN said they are worrying about the current state of affair in regard to protecting the rights of women in Liberia.
Recently hundreds of women gathered at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the current presidential office is located in demands of the protection of their rights, including their concern on the increased wave of rape cases throughout the country.
According to the statistic, in Montserrado County from December 2016 to December 2017, 1,344 rape cases were reported, in December 17 to December 2018 2,246 cases were also reported, this situation is said to be worrying many noting that by 2021, the number may likely increase to a very huge number.
Some of the women who spoke to the GNN in an exclusive interview say they are concerned of such unbelievable number of cases, where women, mainly young girls and teenage children are being victimized in such situation, noting that the Liberian government needs to do something in order to curb this ugly act reportedly being committed by men.
