Presidential Media Team Traveling With President Weah In Car Crash, 12 Critically Wounded
Bong County – At least 12 members of Liberia’s Fourth Estate are said to be in critical condition at the Phebe Hospital in Gbarnga, Bong County after a jeep in the opposing lane of the Presidential convoy ran into the Executive Mansion press vehicle, carrying the journalists.
Deputy Presidential Press Secretary Smith Toby confirmed to FrontPageAfrica a short while ago that the jeep, said to be carrying Cllr. Wilkins Wright and his wife, ran through the presidential convoy and hit the Executive Mansion press vehicle.
“The jeep carrying Cllr. Wright passed by the President’s first escort and hit the press car – all of the press crew in critical condition,” Mr. Toby said Sunday.
At the Phebe Hospital 12 journalists seated at the back of the jeep, who are not to be identified were injured. “Everybody got injured, some people got broken leg, deep cuts on head and the jeep is beyond repaired,” said Mr. Toby. At least 11 journalists are on critical list, besides the other two occupants on the jeep. The camera guy broke his arm and others have serious injuries.”
The accident took place on the Bong County highway between Gbarnga and Totota, near the Charles Taylor Market.
The Deputy Press Secretary said some of the injured are in the process of being transferred to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Monrovia for treatment.
The President and crew were on their way to attend the 180th Methodist Annual Conference in Gbarnga, Bong County.
Mr. Toby said President Weah got out of his car to make sure the injured where removed from the vehicle and taken to Phebe before proceeding to his scheduled program in Gbarnga.
