Cuttington University in Suakoko, Bong County has conferred Honorary Doctorate Degree in Humane Letters on President George Manneh Weah.
Humane Letters is conferred as an honorary degree, usually to those who have distinguished themselves in areas other than science, government, literature or religion.
The degree was conferred on the Liberian leader by Cuttington University’s acting President, Dr. James Tamba, at the institution’s 57th Commencement Convocation held in Suakoko on Friday, June 29.
Reading the citation for the conferral of the degree, CU actting Vice President for Academic Affairs, Anthony Siakor, noted that the decision to bestow the degree on the Liberian leader stems from his work to humanity over the years.
“You are a philanthropist, humanitarian, activist, and an astute and dynamic Liberian politician,” Siakor emphasized.
The CU Vice President pointed out that the conferral of the degree on the president is no mistake as he stood out off the pitch to denounce racism in football which led to his appointment as UN Goodwill Ambassador.
“You used football to bring hope and joy to the children of Liberia and Africa in general. Proving to be versatile and caring, you released an album titled “Lively Up Africa” in 1998, proceeds from which went to charity in countries of origin of the performing athletes,” Siakor added.
He named his management and supervision of the operations of peace initiatives, the promotion of national reconciliation and peace-building, as well as his intervention in the “Ellen Step Down” impasse at the University of Liberia as some of the reasons for conferring the Honorary Doctorate Degree on the Liberian leader.
He also mentioned president Weah’s intervention in the recent stalemate at Cuttington University, as a proven fact that he is a problem-solver and an expert at conflict resolution.
“You have committed and continue to commit your personal resources and finances in peace-building initiatives and ensured accountability and transparency in all of your operations and undertaking,” the CU Vice President explained.
President Weah, who served as the keynote speaker at the program, lauded the Faculty Senate and Board of Trustees of Cuttington for the distinction, noting that he is honored and proud.
The Liberian leader said he accepts the degree with deep humility, bearing in mind that it represents a path of recognition for the modest role he has played in giving care and support to many less fortunate Liberians over the years.
“I am proud to be wooed in the academicals of the Cuttington University, for which I have had years of admiration, for being in the vanguard of providing quality education for thousands of Liberians for decades,” President Weah said.
According to the Liberian leader, he has over the past decades educated and trained young Liberians with the knowledge and skills to enable them compete comparatively with other youths from across the world.
