As GNN investigation in the alleged early printing of the thirty-five billion Liberian banknotes continues, while the National Legislature is said to be debating the issue on the printing, as being requested by the Liberian leader, President George Manneh Weah through the Senate Committee on Banking and Currency, additional information gathered by this outlet has revealed that despite the Senate deliberation on the issue, it has been alleged that said money has been printed and is in the country.
According to the investigation, a renowned Lebanese businessman and owner of a leading local hotel named withheld has reportedly been on the forefront of this latest deal due to the reported relationship with the power that be, while at the same time a credible source closed to the Senate Committee on Banking and currency said the committee is not in the know of any printing of a new banknotes to be in the country.
Our source at the Capitol Building said if the information regarding the alleged printing of new banknotes is proven, this he said will be a violation of the constitution, by printing money without the approval of the legislature, “As far we are concerned at the legislature there has been no green light for the early printing of any money,” our source at the Senate told GNN in an exclusive interview.
The source at the Senate also said two companies including De La Rue International Limited, a British Company headquartered in Basingstoke, England and another one name not disclosed were to be hired to print Liberia’s banknotes, but asked why Chinese Company should be contacted to print money without the approval of the Senate Committee on Banking and Currency.
GNN in order to contact the Media Relations Officer at the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), Cyrus Wleh Badio to ascertain the facts surrounding the reported early printing of a new banknotes did not materialize despite of all efforts made by our staff to reach the CBL official.
However, some Liberians who spoke to the GNN in sampling interviews are expressing concern about this latest development on the early reported printing of new banknotes, wondering as to why this should be done in secrecy. For others, the Senate must take action on the executive if this information on the alleged printing of new banknotes is true.
