In connection with ongoing prosecution of the ‘scandalous’ printing of l5.5 billion Liberian dollar banknotes, President George Mannah Weah has said that no one has been arrested illegally or detained unjustifiably.
President Weah addressing the nation on Wednesday stated that the ongoing prosecution in the unauthorized printing of excess Liberian dollars banknotes is being done through the Liberian legal system and under due process of law.
President Weah pointed out that the ongoing trial will continue until the courts of Liberia issue final verdicts.
Recently, investigative reports from the Presidential Investigative Team which was commissioned by President Weah to probe the Liberian dollar banknotes saga and international audit firm Kroll Associates with support United States government, showed evidence that the CBL printed excess Liberian dollar banknotes than authorized.
Immediately upon receipt of the reports, government commenced the prosecution of officials and employees of CBL whose duty and official responsibility at the CBL was to manage the printing and delivery of Liberian dollar banknotes.
In May, the Justice Ministry arrested and subsequently charged former CBL Governor Milton Weeks, Deputy Governor Charles Sirleaf and other officials of the bank with economic sabotage, misuse of public funds and criminal facilitation.
However, ex-President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf speaking with Al Jazeera UpFront program recently said her son Charles Sirleaf was unjustifiably and illegally charged in connection with the scandalous printing of some 15.5 billion Liberian dollar banknotes which started under her regime.
