Zamira Hajiyeva had previously been named as only ‘Mrs A’

The woman who spent £16m at Harrods has been arrested and faces extradition as she has become the target of UK’s first Unexplained Wealth Order (UWO) case.

Zamira Hajiyeva is the wife of an ex-state banker who is serving a 15-year prison sentence for embezzlement in their home country of Azerbaijan. She has been accused of conspiracy to defraud the International Bank of Azerbaijan by the Azeri government.

Under Britain’s new anti-corruption law, Zamira must explain the source of her wealth to the High Court or risk losing her £15m Knightsbridge home and a Berkshire golf course.

Her lawyers, however, say she is no “fraudster”. The UWO means she has to explain the origin of her fortune.
