Liberian Muslims Tuesday joined other Muslims the world over to celebrate Eid Al-Adha, popularly known as Abraham’s Day.
Throng of Muslims from across the country don their best Islamic attires trooping to their places of worship (mosques) to offer prayer to Allah for his peace and blessings upon Prophet Abraham.
Eid al-Adha is the second of two Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year to honor the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac as an act of obedience to God’s command.
Members of the Islamic faith believe that no figure in history is a greater unifier of the world’s prophetic traditions than Prophet Abraham, viewing the prophet as the patriarch of the Muslim faith.
As part of the day, which is celebrated in memory of the sacrifice of Prophet Abraham, each able body Muslim is supposed to perform the pilgrimage to Mecca.
In keeping with the Islamic traditional practice associated with the celebration, Muslim volunteers are exemplifying the prophetic characteristic of goodwill exhibited by the Holy Prophet by providing hot meals and other necessities to less fortunate Liberians.
In consonance with the traditional animal sacrifice during the celebration of Eid Al-Adha, Muslims distributed pounds of goat, cow, and sheep meat to their brothers and sisters of the faith as well as those from other religions.
Many of them, men and women, young and old came together across national, racial, ethnic and religious divides, unified in their goal and provided community service in the various communities across the country.
Some of them, who spoke with the Liberia News Agency (LINA), expressed joy over the celebration and thanked the Almighty Allah for granting them peace and blessings, especially the first under the Weah-led administration.
As a prophet who fulfilled all the commandments and withstood the trials of the divine God as claimed by Muslims, Mohammed Donzo, a resident of the Jamaica Road Community, urged Muslims to see the Prophet Abraham as an exemplary figure worthy of emulation.
“Prophet Abraham’s unwavering faith earned him God’s blessing to be a leader to all nations of the world; he must be seen by leaders of Liberia as a step to follow amidst the country’s quest to nurture a leadership that will justly rule the people,” Musa Keita, a resident of Benson Street said.
An estimated 12.2 percent of Liberia’s population of 4.6 million practice Islam, a vast majority is Malikite Sunni with a sizable number being Shiaand Ahmadiyya minorities.
