In the wake of the suspension of the Minister of Information, Lenn Eugene Nagbe by the leadership of the Press Union of Liberia for describing the UNION as ‘Useless’, his boss, the Liberian leader, President George Manneh Weah has publicly apologized to the Liberian media on behalf of his Minister (Lenn Eugene Nagbe).
President Weah speaking to media managers and stakeholders in the Liberian media community last Friday, December 29, 2018 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, openly apologized for his chief spokesman to brand the Press Union of Liberia as ‘Useless’.
He told the gathering that his government will do everything possible to uphold freedom of the press and expression in the country, and further vowed that his government will not muscle the Liberian media as it is being perceived by some members of the Liberian media and those in the opposition.
Pouring praises on the media, President Weah said the Liberian press is a heartbeat of his administration, noting, “We need the press for the overall advancement of this government and the country in general,” the Liberian media told journalists who were at the meeting with him.
The Liberian leader speaking further said there are some media practitioners who he noted that are against his government and were in the constant habit of writing negative report on his government, but failed to disclosed the names of those who he claimed are against his government.
“Journalists in the country are equally Liberians, so they need to put the country first over their personal aggrandizement. Those media institutions and personalities are only concern with writing that has the propensity to damage the country’s image, this is entirely wrong,” President Weah voiced during his meeting with the media.
