As Christians around celebrate the birth anniversary of their heavenly father and Lord Jesus Christ, with Liberia been no exception, churches and various worship centers around the country were overly parked colorfully celebrating this day, December 25.
Yesterday, December 24, hundreds of Liberians who queued at various banking institutions to receive remittances from their friends and relatives abroad throgh various money transfer agencies operating in the country were disappointed as many could not receive their money sent from abroad due to the reported lack of cash at some of these banking institutions.
This drama of no money syndrome hit distressed members of the disbanded Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) in their numbers angrily stormed the barrack of the Ministry of National Defense in demand of their three months’ salary which they complained is yet to be received why their families will remain hungry amid the celebration of Christmas day.
The disbanded members of the AFL who chanted anti-slogans yesterday warned the Liberian government through the Ministry of National Defense to speedily provide them with their salary without delay, and further urged President Weah to prevail on the ministry for the settlement of their salary payments.
According to GNN reporter, this year’s Christmas celebration appeared to be a little difference, as kids who usually parade various streets in celebration of this day stayed home due to the lack of sufficient money from their parents to enjoy this day, “My children will stay home without joining their colleagues to celebrate the day, there is no money; even if you had the opportunity to go to the bank, you will still not have the money from your account, due to the lack of money”, Annie Sumo, a mother of six in a chat with the GNN said.
Annie is amongst several other parents who are encountering similar situation, the lack of money to cater to their children’s Christmas celebration this year.
In the face of lack of the money amongst civil servants, Liberia’s Minister of Finance, Development and Planning, Samuel Tweah told a local radio station that salaries payments by the Liberian Government is ongoing at various banks, asking civil servants to remain calm.
