Liberians Decry Reported Plans To Nominate Cllr. Syrenius Cephus As NEC Chairman, But Others Agreed

According to a local daily, the FPA reported today, May 9, 2020, quoting what it called ‘Impeccable source’ that the Liberian leader, President George Manneh Weah ‘is closing in on naming controversial Solicitor-General, Cllr. Sayma Syrenius Cephus, as the next chairman of the National Elections Commission to steer the affairs of this year’s midterm senatorial elections and the 2023 general and presidential elections, Liberians who spoke on a local radio (Sky FM) talks show decried such action on the part of the Liberian leader, questioning the morality  of Cllr. Cephus.

According to the paper, quoting an impeccable source within the Executive Mansion, said the Liberian leader has been reviewing a list of potential candidates for the post over the past weeks with key emphasis being placed on an individual who has absolute loyalty or connection to the ruling party, the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).

Other candidates under consideration by the President include current Montserrado County Attorney Cllr. Edwin K. Martin and Acting NEC Chairman Davidetta Browne Lansanah. However, this information shows that the President seem to be reposing more confidence in Cllr. Cephus as the best person suited for this job.

But reacting to the reported Liberian leader’s plan to nominate Cllr. Cephus on a phone in show, ‘5050’ on Sky FM 107.1, callers condemned the action, noting that he has no moral to head the NEC, and further why should the Liberian leader thread that line by planning to nominate the current Solicitor General of Liberia.

Nearly 75% of the callers on the show today, June 9, 2020, condemned the move by the Liberian leader, noting that despite the presence of qualified Liberians who could best suit such appointment, he chose to appoint his own man who will make him to win the 2023 general and presidential elections, “This action if done will make Liberians resist any result that will be declared by the Sayma Syrenius Cephus’ election commission,” one of the callers said.

“President Weah want to win the 2023 elections at all cost by chosen Cephus as his Elections Commission Chairman; this we will resist,” another caller on the show declared.

But for others to the contrary to previous callers, bragged the decision of the Liberian leader, stressing that the man in question is qualified to head the NEC, warning that there should not be any politics paly on this issue, “Cllr. Cephus is qualified for this position, I applaud the Liberian leader for his decision to nominate him as Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC),” a caller who called on the show to debunk this who are criticizing the decision of the President said.
