Hundreds of Liberian women today swamped the grounds of the Liberian presidency to express their frustration over several issues they feel affecting their lives and wellbeing as a Liberian woman; some of the issues highlighted during their daylong protest include the countless number of recorded rape of underage children by men, and the continuous violations of their rights.
The women who gathered together as early as 6am this morning made their presence felt by lying flat on the ground in front the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the temporary office of the Liberian presidency, some with placards chanting slogans, “We tired of all forms of violence perpetrated against us in Liberia.”
Speaking to reporters, some of the women vowed to continue their sit in protest until their requests are granted by the Liberian leader, President George Manneh Weah, making specific reference of the continuous violence against women and girls on a daily basis.
“Women need to feel safe, we are tired with the excuses, we are tired with girls been killed and we don’t have no concrete action being taken by our government. Our government is supposed to ensure that all its citizens are secure and women are the soft target in Liberia when it comes to both election and domestic violence,” Naomi said.
The women speaking further think the Ministry of Gender and the Liberia National Police and other government agencies and ministries that work directly with those cases are not well equipped with the requisite materials in helping to reduce violence against women.
“We are tired with the excuses that there is no money, we are tired with the excuses that there is no health practitioner there when women are being violated.”
