In order to improve the skills of journalists, the management of the Williams V.S Tubman University Radio Phoenix FM 102.7 has ended its weeklong media training and Refresher workshop.
The training which took place on the campus of the University, brought together several journalists including a Correspondent of the GNN assigned in Maryland County, was facilitated by some Professors of the University, and other potential Journalists in the County.
Making remarks, the Station Manager of Phoenix FM 102.7, Rocheford T. Gardiner, explained the importance of the workshop, and noted that the aim of the workshop is to professionally build the capacity of the participants, including staffers of the radio station.
Some of the facilitators of the workshop included, the former Director of Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service Professor, Dr. Gbanabom Hallowell who also spoke on the management of a university radio.
He further noted that the concept of radio management has to do with the improvement of those who working at said radio station. He also elaborated on the differences between interview, conversation, debate, and discussion, adding, “I am happy indeed to be one of the facilitators of this workshop, let me inform you today as a Journalist, you must always save your recording after interview, and avoid campaigning for Political parties during elections time, he lectured participants during the workshop.
For his part, a former Liberia Broadcasting System staff, and currently Attorney at law, Aldophus Taylor, speaking as one of the facilitators, provided his expertise on newsgathering, and the pronunciation of words, and furthered mentioned that Journalists should always report factual, and reliable and credible news , stress, “I have worked with ELBC for many years so I am knowledgeable when is comes to Journalism; my doors are opened to you anytime,” Taylor lamented.
The intensive weeklong training was well-attended as the Tubman University Associate Vice President for Campus facilities, Gbalee Gray adequately delivered on the Internal Control, and Management linking it up to Journalism. During his explanations, Gray told participants, “Smiles are not stones, Trust nobody, Timelines”, and said Money is not the alternate end. “I want to tell you today,this is a University Radio, Professors and others important individual always listened to the radio, do your best to improve the image of the University”. He told participants.
