The Press Union of Liberia has launched a fellowship for senior students of journalism from the University of Liberia and the Peter Quaqua School of Journalism.
Selected students will be placed at media outlets for ninety days per cycle for the next five years.
Thirty senior students from the Department of Communications & Media Studies at the University of Liberia and the Peter Quaqua School of Journalism are making up the first mentorship period.
The fellowship is aimed at providing beginning for the students and replacing professionals who have left journalism for greener pasture with skilled practitioners who would help in bettering the challenged content in the Liberian Media.
Speaking at the launched of the Press Union of Liberia Senior University Students Fellowship on Thursday, April 14, 2022 in Monrovia at the Headquarters of the Press Union of Liberia, PUL Vice President, Daniel Nyakonah urged the fellows to be studious as the mentorship is providing them an opportunity to launch their careers.
“The intent is to give you a start in journalism and to provide you the much needed skill that will see you being placed permanently based on your performance”, he added.
Nyakonah stressed that the rationale of the fellowship is to prepare journalists into competitive professionals who will match the qualities of their colleagues in the sub-region.
Performing the official launching of the fellowship, PUL President Charles Coffey told the mentees that the process was a worthy venture and as such there must be any reluctance in their quest to become a professional journalist.
Coffey maintained that the profession is a noble one that one’s repetition is important in the public and urged fellow students to have discipline and have passion for the work.
”A disciplined person will always receive the necessary skill required unlike the one who feels they have reached their top, the training will help you to correct some of the errors,’’ the President noted.
Making a remark, INTERNEWS Representative and focal person to the Union on the Fellowship, Madam Torwon Solunteh Brown challenged the mentees to work harder to acquire skills which will improve the general taste of the media in Liberia.
Madam Brown said Internews has had successful fellowships in Liberia which enhanced the capacities of young journalists who are now contributing meaningfully in newsrooms.
She intimated that the PUL- Internews Mentees see the fellowship as an opportunity for the launch of a career that will provide a platform for the good of humanity to be propagated.
- Thirty (30) senior university students from the Department of Communications & Media Studies and the Peter Quaqua School of Journalism were assigned to ten media outlets namely Prime FM, ECOWAS Radio, LUX FM, Liberia Broadcasting System, OK FM, Inquirer Newspaper, Daily Observer, The News Newspaper, Heritage and News Public Trust.
On behalf of the mentors, Sandi Kamara and Francis Pelenah of LUX FM and ELBC urged the mentees to exert every effort to work tirelessly and with commitment to getting the requisite knowledge that will help their respective professional sojourn.
The mentees thanked the Union and its donor for affording them the opportunity to benefit from the fellowship and at the same time promised to not undermine the intent of the USAID Media Activity.
