(ELBC) – The House Committees on Lands, Mines, Energy, Labor, Health and Judiciary of the National Legislature have been mandated to spearhead and probe the operations of Arcerlor Mittal – Liberia.
Arcerlor Mittal is the world’s leading steel and mining company with operations also in Liberia and being investigated by the House of Representatives for allegedly defaulting on its Corporate Social Responsibilities in three counties, Nimba, Bong and Grand Bassa, where it operates in the country.
The complaint was brought to the attention of Plenary, Tuesday, March 20, 2018 by Rep. Joseph Somwarbi of Nimba County.
Rep. Somwarbi accused Arcerlor Mittal of failing to honor its Mineral Development Agreement with government.
He said: “Arcerlor Mittal has failed to rehabilitate roads, provide electricity, safe drinking water, and housing facilities for the host and affected communities”.
Following the reading of the Communication from the complaint, Plenary has therefore, mandated the Houses’ Committees and added both Legislative Caucus Chairs of Bong and Grand Bassa Counties to also include on the investigatory team and report its findings to plenary two weeks after the 2018 Easter break.
Minerals accrue from Arcerlor Mittal’s mining activities is transported by a 240 kilometer railway from Nimba County through Bong County to the Port of Buchanan, in Grand Bassa County, where it is loaded for trans-shipment to Europe and Asia.
