The National Elections Commission (NEC) has extended the exercise for the Replacement of missing and damaged Voter’s registration cards to Thursday June 27, 2019 following intervention by the Government of Liberia a release from the NEC has said.
The deadline for the process has elapsed, However, the NEC stated that the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Finance has promised to foot the bill of US5$ each for all missing and damaged voting cards.
According to the release, the NEC noted that those affected must turn out at either of three NEC offices in Brewersville, Bensonsville or at the NEC headquarters in Sinkor, Monrovia from 9am to 5pm on Wednesday and Thursday, June 26 and 27, 2019.
NEC encourages voters to turnout as there will be no further extension after June 27, 2019 deadline.
In a related development, the Communication Director of the National Elections Commission (NEC) Henry Flomo has said that the pronouncement by the NEC regarding the payment of US$5 to replace lost or damage Voter’s Registration Card is backed by provision enshrined in the 1986 Elections Law of Liberia.
Section 3.5:2 of the 1986 revised Elections Law according to Flomo, provides that, in the event of loss or destruction of the registration card, and after proof has been established, the registrar shall issue a new card for a minimum fee of $5 to be paid in the Internal Revenue.
It can be recalled that the NEC informs the public about the replacement exercise for lost or damaged Voter Registration Cards, begins Friday 21 June 2019.
In a release issued, the NEC said the replacement process of lost or damaged VR Cards will end on Tuesday June 25, 2019.
The Commission cited that two replacement centers have been set-up for the replacement process at its lower Magisterial Office in Brewerville and Upper Magisterial Office in Bensonville, in Montserrado County.
The Commission encouraged registrants to proceed to any of the two replacement centers to obtain a replacement Card invoice from the Magisterial Office and subsequently go to the Liberia Revenue Authority office to make payment.
It said that the LRA will then issue a receipt to the registrant which will be brought back to the NEC Magisterial Office for the replacement of their lost or damaged Voter Registration Card.
Speaking on a local radio talk show in Monrovia, the NEC Communication Director stated that the Commission would have love to underwrite the cost of the process as usual but cited that the entity is not in the position to do so.
“The condition has deemed it necessary to act in conformity with the law of Liberia because of the financial constraints facing the entity,” Flomo noted.
He assured the public that the amount is not going to the Commission’s coffers but will help boost the revenue collection capacity of the country, “The amount is not coming to us,we are not requesting that the money come to us.”
