The President of Liberia Movie Union (LIMU), Mr. Eddie Gibson on Monday paid a courtesy visit at Amos Claudius Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Liberia Fendall Campus to hold discussion with the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Josephus M. Gray for the establishment of a diploma program in film studies and film making to equip young Liberians in the entertainment industry with the needed skills in film-making.
In a brief meeting with the leadership of Sawyer College and Chairpersons of the Department of Arts and Crafts, Mr. Gibson praised the President of the University of Liberia, Prof. Dr. Julius Julukon Sarwolo Nelson for the levels of improvement at the institution as well as his vision for the improvement of the entertainment industry in Liberia.
Mr. Gibson explained that the purpose of his visit was to hold discussion with the dean and appeal to the college offer film studies and film production courses designed to equip members of Liberia Movie Union and other Liberians with skills needed for career in the entertainment industry.
Acceding to him, the movie industry fuels development and also serves as a major economic driver. He, however, said those in the entertainment industry are appealing to the administration of UL to widen the curriculum of the Department of Arts and Crafts to include other courses such as film making and virtual communication.
He said local file is not just driver of economic growth but an opportunity to portray the Liberian cultures international, since it is vital component for any society’s progress. He indicated that film provides innovative and creativities for new ideas and voices, and serves as a new breed of storyteller.
Responding, Dr. Gray lauded Mr. Gibson for the visit at the college and used the occasion to extend warm appreciation him and the leadership of Liberia Movie Union. ” If there were never a time to support or join us, it is now”.
He praised Liberians who are making immense contributions in the entertainment industry to showcase their ideas and portray Liberian cultures in the most positive way. Dr. Gray reiterated that there are too many positives happening in the country that needed to be portrayed to the global societies through entertainment to project the nation’s image internationally.
He reminded Mr. Gibson that the fact that UL administration has recognized the importance of fine arts and film as major drivers to economic growth, the university will partner and collaborate with LIMU to establish a diploma program for film studies and film making to equip students with contextual and technical skills needed for career in the entertainment industry.
Dr. Gray assured Mr. Gibson that efforts are being put into place to review and revise the curriculum of the Department of Arts and Crafts to expand the syllabus for the introduction of needed programs for career development and self-employed.
Dr. Gray said: ” Films are tools of effective communication and awareness; not just creative expression”. He added: ‘ This is an industry of self-employed for revenue earners and a major driver to economic growth of any nation”.
According to Dr. Gray, the introduction of film studies and making will enhance the prestige of the University of Liberia, particularly Amos Claudius Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities.
