Liberia will shortly receive 27,000 COVID-19 vaccine for the country’s healthcare workers fighting to control and prevent the novel coronavirus disease.
The vaccine has been made available through a unique public/private partnership by the MTN, Africa’s leading mobile network and the African Union.
In a mayor commitment to the health of the continent, MTN made the donation in January 2021 to accelerate the AU’s critical program. This was aimed at securing up to seven million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine overall, to be spread across all 55 AU member states, for the healthcare workers specially.
The donation will secure up to seven million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for health workers across the 55 African countries, which is part of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) vaccination initiatives.
“With these vaccines healthcare workers can continue to deliver care to COVID-19 patients without fear because after vaccination, they are protected from the varus. In addition, the communication barriers disappear so parents can be assured of better care,” said Liberia’s EPI Manager Adolphus Clarke.
Liberia had 2,042 COVID-19 cases as of 22 March, with 85 deaths and 1,899 recovered.
The vaccines are due to arrive in the country before the end of March. The Minister of Health, Dr. Wilhemina Jallah said this week which marked another historic day in Liberia in the area of strong public/private partnership.
“With support from Lonestar Cell MTN, we are receiving additional doses of live-saving AstraZeneca Vaccine especially for healthcare workers fighting on the battlefield to ensure that we survive and thrive. We are extremely proud of this partnership because, and provide an opportunity to protect healthcare workers. Also, it represents a major victory for which we are forever grateful,” she said.
According to MTN, Public and Private Partnership are imperative, if we are to succeed in the fight against the pandemic and restore social and economic norms for our communities.
