Regional bloc Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Ambassador to Liberia, Babatunde Ajisomo, has urged Liberians to protect the key elements that bind them, including the rule of law, democracy, and respect of other people’s opinions.
Amb. Ajisomo also wants citizens, as he put it, engage in “constructive criticism” of the government with an indication this will help preserve the peace and stability in the country even amid political and economic issues.
He, meanwhile, termed as a complete “falsehood” media report suggesting that ECOWAS was due to hold a “security meeting” this weekend in the wake of the politically-inspired war of words and news of a planned “peaceful” anti-government protest in Monrovia.
However, Ajisomo told the Liberia News Agency that he and the resident coordinator of the United Nations and other partners have reached out to the government and the opposition to promote dialoge aimed at easing a seeming political tension brewing.
“We are telling government to open the political space. We had a meeting with the President on Monday, and we met with all the collaborating political parties on the means of dialogue. What Liberia needs now is dialogue. That is, all hands should be on deck,” said Ajisomo.
