LIBERIA: Court Grants District #10 Lawmaker Two-Week Medical Leave

Rep Yekeh Kolubah

The Criminal Court “A” on Tuesday granted a request for two-week medical leave filed by lawyers representing District #10 lawmaker, Yekeh Kolubah, to allow him seek treatment abroad.

Following the decision, Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie said that the two weeks as requested by Kolubah to seek medical attention abroad, specifically Accra, Ghana, will commenced on the date of his departure from Liberia.

Judge Willie said the copy of the air ticket for the District #10 lawmaker, should be provided to the Court through the clerk indicating his date of departure and return to Liberia which will be within the space of two weeks.

Judge Willie further pointed out that upon the return of defendant Kolubah, he should report to the office of the Sheriff where he will be made to sign the attendance sheet.

Furthermore, the Judge ordered the Sheriff to issue the appropriate precept that will enable the defendant to travel to Accra, so as to seek medical attention, noting that the precept will not be issued until and unless Kolubah presents his air ticket stating the departure and return dates and is made available to the clerk of court.

On August 15, a bill of information was filed by lawyers representing District #10 lawmaker Kolubah to seek medical leave which stated that the defendant has been diagnosed with hepatitis B and diabetes.

It was based upon the bill of information that Judge Willie issued a subpoena ad testificandum and duces tecum on Dr. Adubul Hellm Aram of Amadyya clinic to testify about the medical report.

But DR Aram, chief medical doctor and administrator of the Amadyya Clinic, indicated that the medical examination was done by him, and that defendant Kolubah is diagnosed of hepatitis and diabetes upon which he needs an urgent medical treatment abroad.

There were several questioned posed by prosecution lawyers to Dr. Aram ,who said he is from a certified and recognized medical institution operating under the Liberia Medical and Dental Broad.

Kolubah needs a permit to travel abroad because he and six others are indicted by the Criminal Court ‘A’ on charges of aggravated assault, criminal attempt to commit murder, kidnapping, criminal facilitation, and criminal solicitation.

The six men were picked up on June 5 following a distress call for victim one Emmanuel Freeman who Police respondents met lying under a market stall opposite Rep. Kolubah’s house naked, handcuffed and with wounds on his head and bruises on his body.

It was based upon his complaint that the Police ordered his (Kolubah) arrest, after the lawmaker along with his accomplices were indicted and issued an arrest order by the court’s Presiding Judge Willie to have them brought before court for prosecution.

Upon the order of Judge Willie the six defendants were immediately arrested and indicted, but Kolubah failed to appear to receive his indictment and writ.

After a week, Kolubah escorted by Grand Bassa County lawmaker Thomas Goshua, Lofa County lawmakers Francis Nyalin and Cllr. Beyan Howard appeared before the court and received his indictment and arrest warrant.

The trial is expected to resume upon Kolubah’s return to the country and reporting to the court’s Sheriff.
